DESCRIPTION:

blackhall blackhallThis small insectoscope measures 37 mm high (minimum) and is about 30 mm in diameter. It has a bent spike attached to the upper housing. The eyepiece provides screw thread focusing, which when maximally unscrewed makes the instrument 41 mm high. The inside of the instrument is bright brass and the outside of the main cylinder is painted dark red. The bottom contains a 'polyprism' referred to as a 'multiple illuminator' in the JRMS.

HISTORY AND FEATURES OF THIS MICROSCOPE

This device was invented by W. Blackhall and noticed in the JRMS of 1890, page 380. Although the idea was to provide multi-sided lighting, in practice, the rays of the prism are not in a location to do this efficiently. Basicly the effect is to see a faceted background behind the subject, more of a novelty than an advantageous illumination system. The quality of the lens is adequate for its degree of magnification.
