DESCRIPTION:
This is a small drum microscope, made in Germany rather than France where most of the microscopes of this type were made. It has a semi-gloss black finish except for the focusing main tube which is nickel-plated as is the 3-part objective. Focusing is by sliding the tube up or down. The microscope stands about 7 1/4 inches high in focused position with the three stacked objectives. The magnification table on the inside of the lid states that magnifications are 50X with one of these, 90X with two, and 130X with all three in place. The microscope itself is stamped JENA on the front of the stage, and GERMANY on the bottom of the relatively heavy foot. The flat mirror can be rotated by small knobs on either side. There

CONDITION:
The microscope is in good optical and mechical condition. The pale tan wooden case is in sound condition with some expansion cracks.

HISTORY OF THIS MICROSCOPE:
This is one of many designs of small student microscopes of French origin produced in the last quarter of the 19th century which continued into the early years of 20th Century. The vast majority were made in France but this one is unusual in that it originated in Germany.
