DESCRIPTION:
This compound achromatic microscope arises from a black painted iron base with a Lister limb. It has an inclination joint and a gimbaled mirror. There are two fixed stage clips. The tube and sleeve are laquered brass. It has a three piece divisible objective. Focusing is via an 'eccentric' mechanism in which a screw attached to the tube is driven in a slot of the knob. This mechanism works suprisingly well.

HISTORY:

This small microscope, was sold by E.B. Meyrowitz as the 'Acme' model in the late 19th century and by the Heil Chemical Company in 1904 as a model with 'eccentric focus'. It was also sold by B. Kahn & Son of New York, circa 1890. The price in 1904 of less than ten dollars, is still equivalent to about $245 in 2015 dollars. Sold by more than one firm, these were clearly made in France and imported.
