This page illustrates the Nelson No 1a Model next to the Nelson No 2 model from about the same time. By this time, substage rotation was no longer an option for the No 2, and substage fine focus was no longer standard, though offered as an option for additional cost. Also note the wider spread of the tripod legs, and the considerably heavier construction of the No 1a. The No 1 stand has a right to left spread of the tripod legs of 28 cm (11 inches) and the No 2 is 19 cm (7 1/2 inches)*. The 1a featured the more sophisticated mechanical stage with concentric controls and the geared rotation of the stage as well. The number 2 stage could be rotated only by hand.
*The spread is measured from outside edge to outside edge of the foot pads. The distance from the front edge of one of the front legs to the back edge of the back leg is 20 1/2 cm (8 inches) for the No 2, compared to 23 cm (9 inches) for the No 1.
