Nelson No 1 microscope substage
The substage collar is on a dovetail mount(A) which slides up and down on the substage support containing the fine focus control(B), which is, in turn carried by the substage with its pinion acting on a rack(C) set into the fine focus assembly. The dovetail mount can be tightened in position with a friction positioning adjustment. This allows customized positioning for various accessories of different lengths. The substage has diagonal rack and pinion coarse adjustment. The substage collar has X-Y centering adjustment and can be rotated via a rack and pinion crown gear arrangement(see below). The substage collar has an engraved silvered scale to indicate rotation.

Fine focusing of the substage is via a knurled knob at the bottom end of the substage fine focusing assembly, utilizing a Campbell differential screw. The image here is shown bottom up to illustrate the arrangement, and also shows the rack.

The substage controls include (a) the coarse focusing control, (b) the fine focusing control at the bottom of the tailpiece, (c) the clamping knob on the dovetail slide, (d) the substage rotation knob, and (e) the two substage centering adjustment knobs.
