HISTORY OF THE THIS MICROSCOPE
demo scopedemo scopeFrom as early as the eighteenth century, microscopists have shared their interests or put on exhibitions of microscopical objects. One way to share the view under the microscope with a large number of people is with a hand-held demonstration microscope which is meant to be passed from person to person. Hand held microscopes for demonstration were sold by many of the major nineteenth century makers. This microscope is unusual in that it is a simple rather than compound microscope. Compound forms of demonstration microscope from the early twentieth century sold by Leitz(left) and Bausch & Lomb(right) are shown here. Demonstration microscopes were often marketed for use in classrooms. For more on this subject, and a review of the type see the article on Demonstration Microscopes on this website.
