MAKER: Sidle &. Co
The Sidle Class microscope was first reported in the JRMS of 1882, but may have been made before that. In the engraving of the instrument in the JRMS, it is shown using the form of the Acme No. 3 microscope:
An example of this instrument in the Science Museum Collection in London shows this microscope using a No 4 instead of the original Acme model. This No 4 is the earlier version of the No 4 however, dating to the early 1880s. The signature on the stage is JOHN W. SIDLE & CO.,LANCASTER PA., ACME, 112
. The wooden base is imprinted: MADE BY ACME OPTICAL WORKS, JAS, W. QUEEN & CO., PHILADELPHIA, AGENTS
