This is a diatom frequently used as a test object. The Genus is characterized by a bar in the center of the valve called a stauros. Apparently the namers of this species thought it looked like a Phoenix bird, as the species phoenicenteron means phoenix in the center Areolae require a 40X objective; mine has an n.a. of 0.70.
