THE WRIGHT EIKONOMETER

A DEVICE FOR DETERMINING MAGNIFICATION OF A MICROSCOPE

c. 1st Qtr 20th C.

Maker: R & J Beck

Wright's Engraving

This instrument is designed to measure the magnifying power of any single eyepiece and objective together. It can also be used to determine the magnification of a simple or single microscope or loupe. It is placed on top of the eyepiece and its principals of operation are documented in the JRMS of 1904, and in more detail in Spitta of 1907:

EIKONOMETER

For example:
Using a stage micrometer with divisions of 0.01 mm, the total magnification= #divisions on eikenometer scale/0.01 x #divisions on the micrometer.

For determining the magnifying power of an eyepiece alone, a simple, (but different), procedure is documented in Wrights book.
